Custer State Park & The Black Hills Nat'l Forest

After leaving our little home at the Badlands, we continued on through South Dakota and made our way into Custer State Park and the Black Hills National Forest. Interesting fact: the Black Hills are not actually named for their dark stones but for the deep green trees that make the area look "black" from far away. Our first stop was Sylvan Lake, where many scenes from the movie National Treasure were shot (though we were sternly told that the movie portrays the lake as being on top of Mt. Rushmore and in reality it is not. Also, there is no city of gold hidden inside. Though I believe WE will be the judge of that!!)
Taylor and I settled in for the night (which according to my calculations was night #7 of sleeping in a tent...phew!) and woke up early early to drive around the area and see how close we could get to Mt. Rushmore without having to actually pay to get in! Pretty close actually! We also met some mountain goats and are looking forward to this afternoon when we will be meeting up with Mike and Jessica again in the Needles (tall thin mountains) for some rock climbing. Well, Taylor will be doing the climbing; I will be shooting the pics safe on the ground! :)
